Online auctions sites are perhaps the best example of the decentralized nature of the World Wide Web. By allowing buyers and sellers to connect directly with one another, online auction sites have made it possible for buyers to purchase goods that would otherwise not be available to them and also allows sellers to reach markets that had previously been inaccessible. By removing geographical considerations from the marketplace, niche vendors have been able to thrive in ways not before possible. However, the increasing use of online auction sites has led to increased competition, and it is becoming increasingly apparent that survival in the online auction space requires copious amounts of research in order to market and price goods for maximum profit.
Selling goods through online auction sites is for many people an enjoyable and lucrative hobby and for others it is a livelihood. In order to take advantage of all that the online auction web sites have to offer, it is important for the seller to conduct some thorough research to determine how best to price his or her merchandise. Many auction sites will allow sellers to browse aggregate sales history. Using sales history allows the seller to see how similar items have sold in the past, as well as when such items are more likely to sell. For example, many items are seasonal and only sell well during a certain time of year (think camping equipment or Christmas trees) while others may actually cycle depending on the time of day that the auction closes. Many buyers shop during their lunch hour or in the evening after supper; by looking at the time of day in which items similar to the one being sold have gone for high prices is a valuable piece of information that gives the seller a slight edge over the competition. While it is possible to get an overview of selling history using some of the tools available on the auction web page, to get truly advanced results it is necessary to be able to construct complicated queries against sales data in order to snoop out the more hidden trends. Many of the most popular online auction sites have published web based application program interfaces (APIs) that allow programmers to incorporate certain operations into their own programs. This means that someone who is familiar with programming could create an application that gathers aggregate sales data and then does analysis on the data. For those without a programming background, there are numerous third party vendors that have written tools using the published APIs to write powerful and sophisticated online auction research tools. These tools are not, in general, free, though many come with trial versions. For those who are serious about making real money on online auction sites, however, the software can easily pay for itself within one month. Need products to sell for high profits on eBay?
