There is a difference between antique watches and vintage watches just as there is a difference between unknowing sellers offering the wrong information and those committing fraud. If you are ever considering a purchase of a watch online and cannot find verification of the veracity of the information in the ad, do not buy it. It may be worth every penny it is being offered for, but it may not what it is claimed to be.
Typically, a vintage watch is consider more than about 40 years old while an antique more than around 100 years old. Although a watch may be old it may not be an antique and the value of a watch cannot be determined by its age alone. Its condition, how many of them were made and how many are surviving and how well the person thinking of buying it likes it will also play key roles in determining its value. When it comes to collectibles, the basic rule is that an item is only worth what an interested party is willing to pay. Therefore, a watch can be considered vintage, be in great condition and still not qualify as a collectable if no one is interested in buying it. Some sellers may really play up the fact that antique watches are rare and ones in like new condition are worth a fortune when, in fact, finding an antique of vintage watch in like new condition is virtually impossible. A watch in great condition is a rarity and finding one in good condition would be cause for a collector to throw a party. If you obtain ownership of a vintage watch it must be treated with care. It should probably not be worn every day and definitely not during hard work or exercise, which could damage it. It should be treated with the respect it deserves for surviving so long.
