There are watches and then there are watches, but powering the movement is an option open for debate. There is little argument that since the introduction of quartz timepieces, no better means of keeping accurate time has arrived on the market. It is a very simple process, as when a small electrical charge is passed through quartz it will vibrate at a consistent frequency, creating and maintain a precise time-base for watches.

In the 1970s the first quartz watches were introduced in the form of LED display watches and were definitely not cheap. However, as work continued on the printed circuit board to be able to power the quartz crystal and the light emitting diodes with a very small battery. The Swiss watchmakers took this challenge and today there are quartz watches that keep almost perfect time, losing about 10 seconds per month, at very reasonable prices.

Before quartz crystal there was the manually wound watch. The movement depended on a spring that could be wound up and as it un-wound it turned the movement. The biggest problem with the manually wound watch was people forgetting to wind it. On top of that, if it was wound too tight, there was a tendency for the spring to break, rendering the watch useless. For top-end watches it could be fixed for a reasonable price but for those on the lower spectrum for quality, it would usually cost more to fix it than to replace.

To overcome the over-winding or non-winding of watches, they began to be made with the ability to wind themselves. Actually, the watch hands did not grab the stem and tighten the spring, rather the movement was revised to allow the motion of the wearer during normal activities to use gravity in moving the mechanism to wind the watch’s spring.

Choosing The Watch That Fits Your Life

Many people are of the opinion that a watch is basically a bracelet that happens to enable you to tell time. Others believe it is a means to know when it is time to go home at the end of the day. Over all they are both right. Either way, you can show your family and friends that you can coordinate your jewelry with your clothing.

When you look for a new watch, or two, it is important that you consider your lifestyle and the activities in which you participate before making the final selection. Especially if you are in the market for a high-end timepiece, it should be selected to last a long time.

First thing to consider is what function you will expect the watch to perform. Obviously if you are going to participate in outdoor activities, regardless of the weather, you will want to buy a waterproof watch, preferably one that is water resistant to 100 meters that you could wear into the swimming pool.

For casual wear you will want a watch with a band that is comfortable, probably leather or an expanding band that is not too tight, but also not overly loose where you risk it coming off when digging through the cooler.

For a more formal occasion, the band and face could match your attire. For example, a stainless steel watch and band will go with just about anything, but if you prefer, a stainless steel face with a leather band in black or brown to match either your belt or your shoe color.

If you are into scuba diving, make sure the watch shows signs of a screw-down cover on the back, and have a water resistance to 200 meters. A watch with a chronograph can help you keep track of your time if involved in any type of racing.

Do Not Get Taken By Antique Watch Scam

There is a difference between antique watches and vintage watches just as there is a difference between unknowing sellers offering the wrong information and those committing fraud. If you are ever considering a purchase of a watch online and cannot find verification of the veracity of the information in the ad, do not buy it. It may be worth every penny it is being offered for, but it may not what it is claimed to be.

Typically, a vintage watch is consider more than about 40 years old while an antique more than around 100 years old. Although a watch may be old it may not be an antique and the value of a watch cannot be determined by its age alone. Its condition, how many of them were made and how many are surviving and how well the person thinking of buying it likes it will also play key roles in determining its value.

When it comes to collectibles, the basic rule is that an item is only worth what an interested party is willing to pay. Therefore, a watch can be considered vintage, be in great condition and still not qualify as a collectable if no one is interested in buying it.

Some sellers may really play up the fact that antique watches are rare and ones in like new condition are worth a fortune when, in fact, finding an antique of vintage watch in like new condition is virtually impossible. A watch in great condition is a rarity and finding one in good condition would be cause for a collector to throw a party.

If you obtain ownership of a vintage watch it must be treated with care. It should probably not be worn every day and definitely not during hard work or exercise, which could damage it. It should be treated with the respect it deserves for surviving so long.

Watches Available With Many Bells And Whistles

There are many style of watches at numerous price points, but one way to run up the tab is with some useful, and perhaps not so useful, features with which some watches are equipped. One of the more common watch features is the day and date feature. Others may also include a monthly calendar so your watch can advise you of the day, date and show the month.

If you participate in a lot of races or just want to time them yourself, you may want a watch equipped with a chronograph, which can be used as a stopwatch. Some are even available with two segments to measure the time of two events at the same time. As long as you are getting a watch to time speed, check one out with a tachymeter. That’s that ring around the face of the watch with all the numbers on it. When used with a chronograph, it aids in measuring average speeds by using the known pre-measured distance and the time.

Water resistant and waterproof mean two very different things. Many watches will indicate, usually on the case or the back, that it is water resistant to a certain depth. A watch that is resistant for 30 meters means they are OK to wear when you think you might get splashed or rained on. A watch rated for 50 meters indicates you can wear it in the shower and a watch that is water resistant up to 100 meters can be worn while swimming. A resistance of 200 meters is needed if you plan on doing any scuba diving with your watch on.

One of the newer bells is a telemeter which measures how far from an object the wearer is located. The watch sends out a signal accompanied by a loud noise while measuring.

Wear Watch For Appropriate Activity

Going to work, on a date, playing sports or hiking in the woods may each require a different style of watch if you plan to have it fit your attire and activity. Although most people will only own two watches, one for work and one for play, others may own three or four to help their watch fit it with what they are doing.

A waterproof watch with a black leather band is an excellent choice for wandering through the woods on a hike, but it will not go with your business suit. It may also go with your bowling shirt or the sweatshirt of your favorite team while watching the game, but it will seem out of place if you take your date to an upscale restaurant.

Your basic watch, gold plated with a gold band that tells the time and maybe the date is great for wearing to work or in social settings. In more formal settings you may want a little better value in your watch, depending on your lifestyle as well as your budget.

The two basic watches every person may want is one that you can feel comfortable wearing to work or to a wedding and another one that may have time and temperature features as well as night-lights and a waterproof plastic band. Your watch should also match any other jewelry items you may choose to wear. For example, if you watch is gold, your rings should be gold and cuff links, if worn, should also be gold in color.
